since the displayed average noise level is typically -120 dbm (300 hz), even weak signals can be reliably detected. this is important for the measurement of spurious and harmonics. within the intermodulation-free dynamic range of the r&s®fs300 no inherent distortions occur, which could interfere with the measurement. this is especially useful when a high dynamic range is required, i.e. high and low levels are to be measured simultaneously. the points in the measurement trace are displayed with a level uncertainty of <1.5 db. this value is unrivalled in this price class and an essential prerequisite for high measurement accuracy.
with 16 digitally implemented resolution bandwidths from 200 hz to 1 mhz, the r&s®fs300 can be optimally adapted to the measurement task at hand. the r&s®fs315 additionally covers the range up to 20 mhz. wide resolution bandwidths for overall measurements ensure short sweep times, whereas narrow bandwidths are ideal for high frequency resolution and a low noise level. the r&s®fs300 and r&s®fs315 fulfill every requirement in between.
with the aid of the built-in frequency counter, the signal frequency can be measured with 1 hz resolution in the entire frequency range. an additional frequency counter is therefore not required which saves space on the lab bench.
the maximum input level of the r&s®fs300 permits signals to be measured far beyond the common limits. mobile phones with a maximum output power of 2 w can be directly connected to the spectrum analyzer without external attenuators being required.
the r&s®fs315 with built-in tracking generator is the perfect solution for cost-efficient testing of the transmission behavior of filters, cables, amplifiers and so forth. equipped with an additional vswr bridge, reflection measurements can also be performed. entering any frequency offset between 0 hz and 3 ghz allows measurements on frequency-converting duts. with simple applications, the tracking generator can be used as a signal generator with a permanently set frequency.
the r&s®hz-15 near-field probes are diagnostic tools used for locating emc weak spots on printed boards, integrated circuits, cables, shieldings and other trouble spots. the near-field probe set r&s®hz-15 is adequate for emission measurements from 30 mhz to 3 ghz. the preamplifier r&s®hz-16 up to 3 ghz, with approximately 20 db gain and a noise figure of 4.5 db, increases sensitivity for measurements. in combination with the r&s®fs300/fs315, the preamplifier and near-field probe set are a cost-effective means of analyzing and locating sources of interference during development.
operation is menu-guided so that even untrained users will quickly obtain correct measurement results. clear structures simplify navigation within the menus. users familiar with spectrum analyzers from
another new feature of the r&s®fs300 is the usb remote-control interface. the user can select external pc control even during instrument operation by means of hot plug and play simply by establishing a usb connection. this is the first time that lab test equipment can be remote-controlled via usb without any restrictions. with the aid of the usb cable, the r&s fs300 can be operated even at positions which are difficult to access, e.g. in a shielded chamber. a windows(2000/xp)-compatible driver for different development environments is provided together with the r&s®fs300. a pc software package is also available for remote control of the r&s®fs300 and for result display and recording.
the r&s®fs300 is notable for its compact and robust design. whether on the operator desk or in the rack, it takes up a minimum of space. two series instruments can even be accommodated next to each other in a 19-inch rack. the new, adjustable handle fulfills several functions. it serves for carrying the r&s®fs300. it can be moved and locked in almost any desired position. with the aid of the handle, the instrument can be set up in a tilted position so that an optimum viewing angle can be obtained for the display. if the handle is in the way, it can easily be put away so that several r&s®fs300 can be stacked, for instance.
the high refresh rate of up to 10 pictures per second ensures smooth display of measurement results. changes of parameters during module adjustment are thus rapidly displayed which saves time in development and production.
the r&s®fs300 offers a number of measurement and marker functions to support signal analysis. two normal or one normal and one delta marker are provided for determining the signal level. the normal marker may be positioned as a reference marker on the fundamental, for instance, while the delta marker is positioned on a harmonic. the difference between the two levels represents the harmonic suppression. the normal or delta markers can also be used as noise markers for measuring the noise power density. the n db bandwidth of a signal, e.g. the 3 db or 6 db bandwidth, can also be easily measured with the r&s®fs300.
up to five traces and ten settings can be stored in the internal memory of the r&s®fs300. frequently used settings can thus be easily called up and the same parameter need not be set over and over again. this also prevents setting errors on the r&s®fs300. the traces stored in the instrument can be called up later and output to a printer, for instance.
